I'm sure this isn't my first conundrum and it won't be my last.
But I really don't get how maternity pants work.
So..do you buy your size that you are currently and the weirdo waistband just sort of accomodates your growing belly? Or do you buy pants several times throughout the course of the pregnancy? Both? It seems sort of dumb (and expensive) that you have to buy pants at several different times.
I don't need maternity pants yet but I sense they are coming closer. I have started looking online and I just don't get it.
HELP!

Neither. Go straight for the muumuu. Just kidding! It's all scientific, which is crap, because pregnant woman can't think logically. See? Clothing companies take advantage of the pregnancy fog. Basically, it depends on the brand. Since there are so many different types of belly bands and maternity pants, and so many different ways a belly grows, you have to play it by ear.
ReplyDeleteI didn't have to buy multiple pants because I never felt the belly band on the pants didn't "fit." Mostly b/c I got the ones that went under the belly. In fact, I wore a pair from Gap yesterday and they still fit! (Is it sad I like the way they fit better than my other jeans? Or is it just that my non-preggo jeans still don't fit. Ah, the latter).
Also, some pants have adjusting button waists, like Old Navy, so they grow with you. I say, more than not, you don't have to buy multiple pants throughout--that they grow with you.
And some unsolicited advice--take advantage of the warm weather pregnancy. That allows you to totally rock the leggings and cotton dresses, which you can get in non-maternity clearance Target racks! Finally, I would suggest trying on maternity pants first before ordering. They fit weird, and you'll definitely find a preference...
I've never been pregnant of course....but I think I heard somebod say to buy the size you were pre-prenancy sm, med, lg, etc. Not sure if that helps! summer can't come soon enough!
ReplyDeleteI just bought the size that I was before I was pregnant. By the end, the pants were a bit tighter in my rear, but I never outgrew any pants. That definitely does happen sometimes... just everyone is different how they carry, etc. But, totally agree with Ali that by summer and the end of your pregnancy, you'll be in dresses and skirts mostly anyway.
ReplyDeleteI liked the pants with a bit more of a panel and I'd fold it down. For me, the ones that just sat low did not stay up and I was constantly yanking them up to avoid my pregnant butt from being exposed. Not at all what I wanted. So with the panel, I'd generally just fold it down, but it helped to keep my pants up. You totally just have to try the different styles and see what works for you.
