Sex?

Yes, Please. (Ahh..Austin Powers).

Now that we are starting to spread the word (AHH! fun!!!), we can pretty much guess what questions people will ask. The number one question always is, "When are you due?". Easy enough. The number two question always is, "Are you going to find out the sex?".

We are NOT going to find out the sex, which I think some people are surprised about given how Type-A we tend to be. However, we both also really like surprises so this is a pretty big surprise!

When we respond, "NO", the conversation can go any which way. Some of my favorites have been:

"You're crazy".

"Oh fun!!!"

"Good. It is more fun that way."

"Well, how are you going to know what color to paint the baby's room?"

"Wow! You have more willpower than I!"

I don't know that it is a matter of willpower. I jokingly say that I will need something to continue to make me push the kid out when the time comes. Otherwise, I might just chicken out. (Or pass out...)

Let's back up to "How are you going to know what color..." comments. These are my personal favorite. This exact quote was from a waiter last week who gave me a funny look when I was gushing on my cell phone and my husband explained that we were having a baby. He seriously was acting like we were making a HUGE mistake for not finding out the sex. Color is one of reasons I was pro not finding out. "Now we won't only get only pastel pink or only pastel blue clothes", I thought. Then, I started paying attention and looking at baby clothing stores. Non-pink and non-blue clothes are few and far between. After about the 4th baby store we went into one day, we noticed a pattern. One side of the store was pink, and one side was blue. Whatever happend to the 62 other colors in the crayola crayon box? I'm not saying I would refuse to dress a boy in blue or a girl in pink, but I just am a little dismayed that the majority of clothing items seem to be in these colors. After attending a baby shower yesterday where the couple was not going to find out, all the clothes then are pastel green or pastel yellow. The older mothers in the crowd said you used to be able to find more gender neutral stuff when it wasn't possible to find out the sex. So technology ruins baby fashion, ha ha ha. If any of you mamas have any recommendations, shout them out.

As for the nursery, well, that is probably one of the things I have been most obsessed with - collecting pictures, searching for cribs, rugs, making a (long) list of craft projects to make for the room. It was never the plan to paint the nursery blue or pink. I know I am new to this whole parenting thing, but I don't think our child will have an identity complex if his room is not powder blue or her room is not bubblegum pink.

Of course, I didn't say all this to the waiter. I just smiled and said, "I think we'll be ok".
